ADRA continued its assessment as reported previously.

Following much detailed assessment work, another organization has entered the area where ADRA was planning activities with significant funding and plans to initiate similar activities to those of ADRA. Although this has been a setback to the assessment team, they will continue tomorrow to a new area to assess the remaining needs.

5 January 2005   Situation Report No. 3
ADRA today has continued its assessment in the hardest hit areas of Thailand with three teams assessing needs in different regions.

  Group One
This team traveled to the outlying island of Kho Khao where meetings with the district authorities were held and the damage and subsequent needs were surveyed. The island appeared to be without a public water supply and had suffered extensive damage with reports suggesting that water had washed completely over the island. One uninhabited island near by has been lost, a blow to the economy as the island was regularly visited by tourists.Further information of the relative needs and the existing response will be available tomorrow.

  Group Two
Yesterday this group visited the Ban Kamala School which was almost completely destroyed by the disaster. The sub-district government authorities indicated that they required a further $75,000 on top of the funds provided by the government in order to rebuild the school.

Today the team has been assessing the needs in Ban Nam Khem, a Thai
fishing village devastated by the tsunami.-Much of the population is remaining in tents, and may be required to use temporary housing for up to 3 months while houses are rebuilt.

ADRA has been developing means by which it can assist the remaining population to recover their livelihoods. A focus has been given to the needs of small private fishing enterprises and a project to address these needs is likely to be developed.

The Thai authorities have an interest in restoring the fisheries in the area and have undertaken to replace large fishing vessels. ADRA is also exploring means by which a partnership may be formed with the government authorities to assist the small scale fishers also.

  Group Three
Comprised of water experts from the ADRA Thailand staff, this team has traveled to a village that had been operating a small water filtration and distribution system to serve the surrounding communities. This system was an income generating enterprise for the village as they were provided a small fee for the use of the water. 200 households were part of the enterprise. The water experts are onsite to assist the village in the repair of the equipment to enable the system to be reopened to the affected villages that are now without water supply.

Currently the population in these villages is being provided bottled water by the government.

The community has also requested assistance with the rebuilding of their community hall.

Note has been made by the assessment team of the strong support provided to them by the local government authorities.

4 January 2005   Situation Report No. 2
The ADRA Thailand assessment team have split into 3 groups to cover a greater amount of territory.

One group has reported the scenes observed in Ban Nam Kem, and Thai village that was nearly completely destroyed in the Tsunami where the water reached as far as 1km inland.

The team have conducted interviews with people that have lost their whole families and all their belongings. Bodies of family members were found 1 km from the location they were when the Tsunami hit the coast.

The Government of Thailand is assisting extensively in the area, and will take responsibility for rebuilding and refurnishing people’s homes.

Reports received by the assessment team indicate that the conditions on outlying islands where the government is said to be the only responding entity may require more urgent attention, however boats along the coast were lost or destroyed in the tsunami and arranging passage to the islands has proven difficult.

ADRA is assessing the livelihood issues that appear to be a large concern for the remaining inhabitants of the coastal towns. Boats and fishing equipment, the tools of the primary industry in this area, have been completely lost and account for a substantial investment. ADRA is exploring means by which they can assist these
people to restore their livelihoods.

In Thailand also, the signs of psychological distress are emerging and may prove an area for attention during the next period of activity.

3 January 2005   Situation Report No. 1
Immediately following the disaster in the south of the country, ADRA Thailand organized the procurement and distribution of 1,960 relief packages containing noodles, fish sauce, rice, tinned fish, energy drinks, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, clothes, and drinking water.

ADRA Thailand has coordinated with the health department of the local government to provide protective wear for the health and recovery workers assisting with the retrieval, transport, and storage of bodies. Supplies included 7,000 face masks, 1,000 pairs of gloves, and 100 aprons.

Local hospitals have been overwhelmed with the care and treatment of the injured. The scale of the disaster has resulted in the inability of hospitals to record and track patients. ADRA Thailand has cooperated with the local Mission Hospital to assist with the expenses associated with ambulance services, in-patient and out-patient care of the injured, and follow-up field visits to the affected areas to assess the longer term medical needs of the injured and provide necessary in-home medical services.

A needs assessment team is currently on site to determine the current and likely future needs primarily of the Thai communities worst affected by the tragedy and largely out of the media spotlight

ADRA Thailand has identified two schools that have sustained significant damage. As students return to school there is an urgent need for supplies. ADRA will be assessing these needs during the current assessment team.
