Tsunami
The 9.0 earthquake off the western coast of northern Sumatra on 26 December 2004, depth 10 km, 7:59 am local time (00.59 GMT) triggered massive waves or ‘tsunamis,’ inundating coastal areas in countries around the Indian Ocean rim. Sri Lanka, the Indonesian province of Aceh, four states of southern India, the Maldives, coastal areas of Thailand, Malaysia, and Myanmar were the most severely affected.

    Emergency Youth Project
 

This project is to provide 200 households in transitional shelter facilities with personal hygiene items and school material items; An assessment took place regarding the households to determine which items were need the most; Quotations have now been collected for this items. The next stage will be to purchase and distribute the items.

 
     
    Tangalle Livelihoods Recovery Project
 

One thousand beneficiaries have been identified; All beneficiaries have been interviewed and have made their selections regarding which livelihood program to follow; Livestock has now been allocated; Purchasing and distribution will follow.

 
     
    Ampara Emergency Dental Project
 
Office space and housing has been located for the staff; A local dentist has now been hired; In the process of purchasing dental equipment and supplies.

    Hambantota Emergency Water Assistance Program
  Seven hundred (700) water tanks have now been installed in the permanent sites and 550 of these tanks are being filled with water daily. Twenty-two thousand (22,000) persons are beneficiaries of this daily water delivery.
 
     
  Cement ring based supplier has delivered 800 rings.
     
  Five thousand (5,000) kg of chlorine ordered, 2,500 kg of which were given to Water Supply Board authorities. The balance will be delivered at the completion of the project.
 
     
  Fifty (50) water wells identified to receive handheld water pumps.
     
  Purchased 15,000 x 25-L water containers for beneficiary families, 500 of which have been delivered by the vendor. The balance will be delivered within the next two weeks.
 
     
  Donated 3 water bowsers, 3 tractors, and 3 generator/pumps with all fittings to the government of Hambantota District for faster and more efficient water distribution.
 
     
    Hambantota Livelihoods Rehabilitation Project
  List of 1,000 beneficiaries has been presented to the Project Director by local government. ADRA will conduct survey to assess whether these potential beneficiaries meet criteria.

  ADRA Sri Lanka plans to provide transitory latrines in the areas where the Salvation Army will build homes. The government has allocated 244 acres of land on the Galagoda Wattha Plantation, near Hikkaduwa.

  Galle District
  On 10 March, 50 tents were distributed in the Balapitiya area; two mattresses were distributed with each tent.
 
     
  In Ambalangoda, 46 tents were distributed; two mattresses were distributed with each tent.
 
     
   

Hambantota District

  An additional 500 tanks have been ordered because of savings in the manufacturing of the water tanks. About 1,500 water tanks will be provided to beneficiaries. This will be the water source for about 15,000 families in the Hambantota District.
 
     
    Kudawella District
  ADRA is currently working in this district -- the largest -- where from 100 to 200 families are receiving pure drinking water as a result of a water purification project.

  ADRA Sri Lanka has proposed a two-phase dental project to meet the needs of the 80,000 IDPs in the Pottuvil and Thirukkovil areas. A fully-equipped mobile dental unit will be deployed to the designated project areas and will provide a range of preventative and curative dental interventions for the target population.
 
     
  The second phase of the project will provide dental care for a 12-month period in the Pottuvil and Thirukkovil areas. ADRA plans to provide additional services such as dental health education, emergency, curative and preventative dental care.
 
     
28 February 2005   Situation Report No. 24
  Via a partnership with Swiss Solidarity, ADRA has installed three water tanks, have been installed as part of the ongoing Hambantota Water Assistance Program. The total number of beneficiaries is 30 families or approximately 150 persons.
 
     
  ADRA and DFID are initiating a livelihoods rehabilitation project in Tangalle District. This will start on the 1st March and will for 6 months provide: animals and agricultural training and animal husbandry training to 1,000 households who have lost their livelihoods and their homes in the tsunami.
 
     
21 February 2005   Situation Report No. 23
  ADRA Sri Lanka, in cooperation with ADRA UK and DFID, just received approval to for a project that will ensure there is necessary water sourcing, storage and distribution capacity within the transitional shelter facilities being provided by the Government of Sri Lanka for 5,000 IDP households of Ampara. This will prevent the incidence of water-related illnesses.
 
     
  The first shipment of 119 tents was delivered to Hikkaduwa on Friday and distributed to two of the IDP camps. On Sunday, 61 tents were distributed.

Tangalle

  ADRA Sri Lanka received approval for its Sri Lanka Tangalle Livelihoods Recovery Project. The duration of this project is for 6 months.
 
     
  ADRA Sri Lanka is making progress with its Emergency Water Distribution Project. Activities that have occurred include the following:
 
   

•10,000 families have been identified between Dickwella and Kirinda, who will benefit from this water distribution project.

•500 committees have been set up. Each committee has 1 leader. The leader is responsible for 10 families. They will also be responsible for the daily or bi-daily refilling of the water holders. The committee leaders have agreed that they will make the slabs for the water tanks to sit on.

•One tank platform Prototype has been built and is 1½ meters high. Another prototype will be built in a circular shape, also 1½ meters high. This type will be portable so that when the IDPs go to their new houses, they will be able to move the water tanks with them.

     
    Pottuvil
 

ADRA Sri Lanka has received approval from the Department of TB for its TB camp containment project. ADRA Sri Lanka plans to buy six microscopes for the project.

  ADRA Sri Lanka, through the support of ADRA Australia, is proposing to design a program that screens IDPs for tuberculosis. Active cases would then be relocated to camps where the TB threat can be treated and contained without the risk of a TB epidemic.
 
     
  ADRA Sri Lanka, through the support of ADRA Australia, plans to look into the feasibility of facilitating the regeneration of the reefs that were previously destroyed by depositing cement and rebar debris in appropriate places on the seabed.
 
     
  ADRA Sri Lanka, through a partnership with ADRA Canada plans to health and public health support through the provision of 100 latrines in Kudawella in the Tangalle DS in the Hambantota District; distribute 3,000 mosquito nets in the Pottuvil DS in Ampara District and help fishermen reestablish means of income in the bay area.

  ADRA Sri Lanka has finalized a new comprehensive organigram to streamline operations and decision-making in the wake of increased program activity as a result of the earthquake/tsunami. They have developed and approved a MoU with WHO, in relation to 2 new projects: Emergency Disinfection and Emergency Corpse Removal II. Cooperation with ADRA’s regional office has helped to facilitate ADRA Sri Lanka’s operations.
 
     
    Tangalla
  A total of 1,000 water tanks, each with a capacity of 2,000 liters, will be provided. One (1) tank will supply water for 5 households. Water containers and water purification tablets are also being provided. The funding source is ADRA Switzerland. ADRA Canada is assisting with providing 100 latrines in one camp in Tangalla. Some medical assistance is also being offered to the people, through a variety of funding sources in Europe.
 
     
    Hikkaduwa
  ADRA Germany is assisting with providing 500 tents for IDPs.
   
    Pottuvil
  In the Public Health sector, a health clinic, a dental clinic and an out-patient clinic have been established. Progress has been made with for ADRA’s plan to assist fishermen in providing fishing boats and fishing nets. Additionally, water purification
materials and containers have also been distributed.

  ADRA Sri Lanka is flying in face masks and bacterial filters, body suits and blowers for the disinfection of areas where corpses and dead animals have been lying.

17 January 2005   Situation Report No. 12
  ADRA Sri Lanka has deployed a second medical team to Kalmunai to give medical treatment to more than 1,000 IDPs.
 
     
  Two teams of doctors in Ampara have been doing medical assessments.
   
  A shipment containing 50 foggers arrived today, 17 January. The machines will be used to disinfect and deodorize the IDP camps. ADRA Sri Lanka will provide training to workers from WHO and the Sri Lankan MoH, who will be operating the foggers.
 
     
14 January 2005   Situation Report No. 10
  ADRA Sri Lanka is working with a team from South Africa to train locals and oversee the disinfection of the coastal areas in the south. That consists of spraying the beach with disinfectant, anti malarial, and anti fly spray; and deodorizing areas when bodies are retrieved from the water.
 
     
  A distribution convoy of goods left Colombo to Kalmunai and Batticaloa today. This convoy is in partnership with Heart to Heart, which will distribute hundreds of personal care kits that include shampoo, soap, towels, tissues, stuffed toys, toothpaste and other personal care items.
 
     
  Following the IDP camp, the convoy will travel to Batticaloa to deliver much needed medical supplies to Batticaloa University Hospital.

  ADRA Sri Lanka has done several deliveries with the use of the U. S. Marine Corps helicopters.
 
     
11 January 2005   Situation Report No. 7
  A medical team arranged through ADRA Hungary is in Sri Lanka. Currently they are in Kalmunai in the east and are set to work in that area for their first assignment. They will be here for 10 days. This team consists of 2 doctors, a nurse, and a social worker.
 
     
  The fogger project got off to a great start on Sunday, Jan 9. They were able to disinfect 3 temples and a school. Today more equipment arrived for this initiative, including protective gear. The training for this projet will be left to the Sri Lankan military.
 
     
  The Tangalle field office is now close to completely set up.A new field office in Balapitiya (near Galle) is now also being established.
 
     
  Approval has been granted for funds to enable the disinfection and deodorizing of coastal areas in cooperation with the government.
 
     
  ADRA is partnering with Heart to Heart to provide a shipment of water purification units that are due to arrive this week.

5 January 2005   Situation Report No. 3
  A site office in Tangalle is being established, and staff accommodation has been donated free of charge. The site was donated by the Government of Sri Lanka.
 
     
  Research for a future project focused on fisheries is also being undertaken.
   
  A medical team from Heart to Heart is being arranged to assist in Sri Lanka and provide additional medical supplies
 
     
  Medicines are continuing to be distributed through hospitals in the south of the country.
 
     
  ADRA has distributed enough medical supplies to the affected areas to treat 50,000 people for 3 months.
 
     
  A medical team remains on standby in case of a disease epidemic.
   
  ADRA is preparing to have resources on standby to enable the delivery of 20 cholera kits, and 20 IV kits in case of a major outbreak of cholera or diarrhea. If cholera is to occur it is likely to be detected sometime next week.
 
     
  A team of engineers from Germany have arrived in Colombo and will be leaving for the south of the island with the water specialist from South Africa. They will assist in the operation of 2 water filtration units in affected areas of the south.
 
     
  Six reverse osmosis water purifiers are on route to Sri Lanka, as are 6 disinfection units to aid in body recovery.
 
     
4 January 2005   Situation Report No. 2
  A medical team is being organized to assist in the IDP camps.
   
  ADRA was the first on the ground in Sri Lanka with a water and sanitation team. This team has assessed the needs in the south and prepared projects for funding.
 
     
  ADRA is operating a water purification unit that can produce 50,000 liters/day. An additional unit will be provided to ADRA by the Government of Sri Lanka to operate. 2 additional units will be arriving that each process 15,000 liters/day including salt water. In addition, ADRA has 300,000 water purification tablets that can be used as required.
 
     
  ADRA will be assisting in the task of removing and burying badly decomposed bodies that are currently posing a major health risk. ADRA is importing 200 foggers to clean and deodorize bodies and areas where bodies have been decomposing, and will assist a team in safe processing and burial of large numbers of bodies. ADRA is also preparing to assist the government of Sri Lanka to monitor mass grave sites in order to ensure they do not present a public health risk.
 
     
  ADRA is providing services in the region from Galle to Hambantota.
   
  ADRA is currently undertaking an assessment of the need for additional medical personnel following reports that this need may now be adequately served.
 
     
  ADRA has placed medical teams on standby incase of the outbreak of a major public health epidemic in the affected regions.
 
     
  ADRA is establishing a field office in Tangalle on the coast between Matara and Hambantota on a site donated by the Government of Sri Lanka.
 
     
  Signs of severe psychological trauma are emerging due to losses and devastation caused by the Tsunami, and ADRA is now in dialogue with the Government of Sri Lanka to investigate means by which they can cooperate to assist mental health specialists.
 
     
  Activities related to the distribution of medical aid are ongoing.
   
3 January 2005   Situation Report No. 1
  A German team is on location with two ambulances and water purification units will be operational on-site soon.
 
     
  A team of bulk water purification specialists from South Africa is working along the southern coast. This team has been requested by the Prime Minister’s office to assist the government with the prevention of water contamination and the improvement of sanitation. The medium term focus of the activities designed by the team will be on bulk water purification, soil salinity in agricultural areas, and rehabilitation of wells.
 
     
  A medical team from the United States has arrived to assess the specific needs for medicines in the affected regions. An additional medical team from Hungary is scheduled to arrive on 7 January.
 
     
  ADRA Sri Lanka has cooperated with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse in coordinating its response with the local and national government authorities and other aid agencies.
 
     
  Additional medical relief items will be delivered to the hospitals in the area including oral dehydration salts, surgical supplies, antibiotics, and other essential medical consumables following the assessment by a medical team.
 
     
  On 1 January ADRA Sri Lanka delivered a shipment of medical aid to Hambantota district in an area hardest hit by the tsunami. The medical supplies will be adequate for 10,000 people for 3 months.
 
     
  On 28 December ADRA Sri Lanka received 9 tons of medical supplies.
