A group of 40 teachers and headmasters are meeting today to plan recovery

activities for education. Before the disaster there were 2,000 teachers in the area, now hundreds are missing and 72 are confirmed dead. There are currently 8,500 school children in the IDP camps. The teachers group are searching for the other teachers while deciding on the immediate needs to enable children to return to normal activity as a means to addressing the psychosocial needs of this vulnerable group. |

All schools in the area were either damaged or are now being used as IDP camps,
| |
so no educational facilities are currently available. ADRA has today ordered 50 large tents that can be used for holding classes, and will assist the teachers group to source the materials they require to commence classes. The tents will be delivered next week, and once the group has provided their list of needs to ADRA an order will be placed. ADRA is also planning to procure an additional 150 family sized tents. |

Situation Report No. 2 |
| |
ADRA is one of the only NGOs (together with the Red Cross) currently working in |
| |
Meulaboh on the west coast of Aceh province. Many NGOs have focused on the east coast and Banda Aceh, a city devastated by the tsunami and earthquake, but with greater accessibility then the west coast towns. ADRA has focused on the west coast area around Meulaboh in an attempt to provide necessary relief supplies to the population hardest hit by the disaster and subsequently the most inaccessible. It appears as though a significant portion of the population along the west coast has been lost, thereby affecting the scope of activities possible, however the needs of the surviving population remain great. |
| |
| |
The assessment team reports scenes of devastation with little left standing along the coastline, roads and bridges destroyed, and survivors being transported to internally displaced people (IDP) camps by military helicopters. |
| |
| |
| |
Access to the area is only possible by light aircraft or helicopter due to the small airstrip and damaged bridges. |
| |
| |
| |
Food is being delivered by military helicopters. |
| |
| |
Immediate relief needs are medicines which are en-route, infant formula, water |
| |
purification in IDP camps, and repair to public buildings and housing. |
| |
| |
ADRA is coordinating with the authorities on the ground and have been provided |
| |
focus activities. |
| |
| |
The IDP camps are located in public buildings that are still standing, but plans are developing to relocate the camps to a more appropriate site. ADRA has been requested to assist with establishing an IDP camp for 12,000 people. |
| |
| |
| |
Diarrhea is being reported within the IDP camps, indicating that the environment is presenting a public health risk. |
| |
| |
| |
Reports indicate that the authorities may be planning to evacuate Banda Aceh to |
| |
relocate the population to a temporary IDP camp. |
| |
| |
Damage to infrastructure has caused massive logistical difficulties. Huge stockpiles of supplies were observed at Medan airport. |

Situation Report No. 1 |
| |
ADRA Indonesia is coordinating a medical expedition in Banda Aceh. 30 volunteers |
| |
from the Bandar Lampung Adventist Hospital and the Medan Adventist Hospital are providing medical services along the coast around Banda Aceh. Physicians are on-route from the USA to provide support. Staff will be rotated from Jakarta to assist the volunteer team and continue work along the Banda Aceh coast. The team will establish Hospital tents from which medical services can be delivered to patients. |
| |
| |
The medical team is working under the co-ordination of the Director for Medical |
| |
Aid/Services of the National Disaster Coordinating Agency. ADRA Indonesia has partnered with a local NGO and recruited local volunteers to provide logistical assistance in the delivery of food, water, and essential non-food items to refugee camps. This activity is planned to continue into a second phase that will include medical supplies to support the medical team coordinated by ADRA. |
| |
| |
An ADRA assessment team was assigned to the Meulaboh region on the west |
| |
coast south of Banda Aceh in one of the hardest hit areas of the island. Based on the assessed needs, and project will be designed to address the short to medium term needs of the population remaining in this region. |
| |
| |
Reports confirm that up to 80 percent of infrastructure is damaged in major towns in
| |
the area, and well over one third of the population is some coastal towns of 40,000+ have been killed. Bridges have been destroyed into the area severely hampering the delivery of aid with access for the assessment team only possible by light aircraft. |
| |
| |
The office in Jakarta continues to collect supplies to be distributed to the affected |
| |
regions. |
