Tsunami    
The 9.0 earthquake off the western coast of northern Sumatra on 26 December 2004, depth 10 km, 7:59 am local time (00.59 GMT) triggered massive waves or ‘tsunamis,’ inundating coastal areas in countries around the Indian Ocean rim. Sri Lanka, the Indonesian province of Aceh, four states of southern India, the Maldives, coastal areas of Thailand, Malaysia, and Myanmar were the most severely affected.

  Through the various efforts of P. Kenny, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, and the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi, ADRA India personnel, Arlyn Sundsted and Mitsu Toyoda, have been given unlimited access to the Nicobar Islands.
 
     
21 March 2005   Situation Report No. 27
  A permanent housing construction project will begin on 1 April 2005. About 200 houses and toilets will be constructed; and six wells will be installed to provide water and sanitation to the villages.
 
     
  The first shipment of three prefabricated buildings arrived in Campbell Bay. The Indian Coast Guard provided two ships to ship the materials to Campbell Bay from Port Blair last week. The second shipment will be sent on to Campbell Bay this week.
 
     
  The top agenda for the Japan Platform/ADRA Japan Hut Bay project (TRRI-HUT) is to start constructing 500 intermediate shelters for the tsunami victims in Hut Bay. The work of shelter construction started the week of 5 March and will be completed in the next six weeks.

    Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  ADRA India received approval for its Little Andaman Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation Initiative (TRRI-HUT) Project. Through a partnership with ADRA Japan, the initiative will provide 500 intermediate shelter units; 3 pre-fabricated sub-centers; 3 rain water harvesting systems installed along the constructed at the sub-health center sites; 10 sanitary open wells constructed with proper covering.

  ADRA India is expecting the International Behavioral Health Trauma Team from Loma Linda University (Loma Linda, CA, USA). The team is scheduled to visit Tamil Nadu from Feb. 24 to Feb. 27, and will conduct a seminar on post trauma counseling for ADRA tsunami project workers. Two members of the team will later travel to a second site in Pondicherry.

  ADRA’s assessment team is also currently based in Campbell Bay and is conducting an assessment of the devastation caused by the tsunami.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

  ADRA India has sent a team out to an island in the Nicobars to do some medical work and complete an assessment; ADRA India is waiting on an assessment from the islands.
 
     
  ADRA India has received approval for a $100,000 project for the Nicobar Islands. This will be a forerunner for the DFID project we have submitted for, which is for more than $1,000,000 to fund a reconstruction project on Greater Nicobar Island. ADRA India plans to build 30 schools and health clinics on Great Nicobar Island. The project will enable the displaced families to access education, health services, and water and sanitation facilities.
 
     
  As part of the ongoing Andaman and Nicobar Islands Tsunami Relief project, classrooms, clinics, housing, and toilets have been ordered.
 
     
  ADRA Japan plans to fund another phase for its Health project (shelter, water and medical).
 
    Andhra Pradesh
  ADRA India just completed the Livelihood support project in which fishing nets were distributed to 350 families.
 
     
    Tamil Nadu
  About 300 single Toilets are being produced for shipment to be installed in settlement areas in partnership with other NGO’s building shelters.
 
     
  ADRA Australia is seeking to fund another phase for their project which benefits women and children. The future project would not be any smaller than the one they have funded.
 
     
  Agreements for project sites have been confirmed. Additional villages have been assigned for future projects for ADRA India

  ADRA Japan plans to fund another phase for their Health project (shelter, water and medical)
 
     
  ADRA India has sent a team to Andaman, to make advance preparations for the $100,000 project from ARO to build schools. An Indian national has also been flown in by helicopter from Port Blair, to facilitate the process.
 
     
  On 25 January, a representative from ADRA India, will meet with ADRA Austria in Chennai in preparation for filming the distribution of fishing nets in 3 villages in Andhra Pradesh.
 
     
20 January 2005   Situation Report No. 15
  ADRA India, supported by ADRA Japan, has made final arrangements for the shipment of relief supplies to the Andaman Islands. The shipment will contain tents to provide shelter for 200 families, and provide blankets, mosquito nets, water containers to the relief camps, serving 4,000 people.
 
     
  In Andaman and Nicobar Islands, ADRA India, supported by ADRA Japan, has implemented health awareness programs. They have placed 2 teams in the capital city of Port Blair to assist people who’ve been airlifted out of the southern islands in the Nicobar district, and have provided shelter to people in 14 relief camps which have been organized in Port Blair. ADRA is also providing health awareness education to 2,000 children to prevent infection outbreaks. Visual aids, posters, games, and other age-appropriate materials are being used to conduct this educative process. In south Andaman, similar programs are being conducted for 800 people, who are living in 14 relief camps.

ADRA will send a team to Andrah Pradesh to assess the needs of the fishing villages and see what types of nets and boats are needed.

ADRA is planning to address immediate medical requirements including vaccination, inoculation of cattle, chlorination of wells and distribution of anti-cholera tablets.

 
     
 

ADRA India is also planning to form a team of two doctors, three trained nurses, and two psychologists, to provide services to at least 60,000 people.

 
     
  Plans for the sanitation project remain as previously reported equipment.
   
 

The project to deliver NFI and health education to IDP camps on the Andaman Islands has been approved and will begin next week.

 
     
 

The assessment team has returned from the island and provided their report. Damage is confirmed to be greatest on the south side of South Andaman and Little Andaman Islands. The international media is reporting high death rates on Nicobar Islands, however access has remained closed to ADRA and many other NGOs. During the course of the implementation of this project, ADRA will continue to seek entry to the Nicobar Islands.

    Tamil Nadu
 

The feeding program for 2,750 people in Tamil Nadu as reported previously is ongoing with dry food products. Supplies include rice, dhal, and oil.

 
     
 

The Government authorities have expressed their appreciation to ADRA for their activities in the area.

 
     
 

The project staff were featured on an interview aired nationally across the country.

   
 

Negotiations are still ongoing for 2 water purification units capable of purifying 100,000 liters/day which will be adequate for 10 water tanks daily.

  Since December 30 ADRA India has been providing food to 7,250 refugees in IDP camps in Tamil Nadu.
 
     
 

As people begin moving from camps around Chennai to the city, ADRA India is moving towards further outlying towns and refugee camps to continue to deliver necessary assistance.

 
     
 

Two water purification units will be used to provide drinking water to affected regions in Tamil Nadu.

 
     
 

ADRA India is planning to provide sanitation facilities to 16,000 people in refugee camps in the affected areas.

 
     
 

An assessment team has been sent to the Andaman Islands to review the immediate needs in the area. Plans are being made to provide shelter, blankets, mosquito nets, and medical supplies.
